We first coined the term Elastic WMStm , all the way back in 2017, to describe a new way of think about how a Warehouse Management System could operate. We started by asking a very simple question:

What is the Value Proposition of a WMS?

Simple, right? Yes, but important. Here are the facts of modern warehouses and distribution centers:

  • They are more likely than ever to have robotics, a warehouse execution system (pick to light, put to light, mechanized picking, etc) than ever. This trend is increasing.
  • They are more likely than ever to have some sort of mechanized conveyance like conveyors, autonomous inventory movers, etc.
  • Getting data to analytics and machine learning is going to be at the forefront.
  • Integration and coordination is key.

It became apparent to us that the role of the WMS is changes and it needs to handle this new role with a more nimble edge-to-cloud approach. Thus the idea for the Elastic WMStm.
